Hello everyone and welcome to the first week of the Malifaux Super League predictor competition, where each week myself (Lewis) and my super league opponent will be predicting the scores of the other games, a correct score is worth 25 points and a correct result is worth 10 points, at the end of the Super League the predictor with the highest score (mine will be average across all weeks) will win the Nightmare Ulix Box.

My opponent for week 1 is one of my newer meta mates after moving to the area not too long ago, Steve Johnston. Steve has been playing Faux for 5 years now and has won a handful of smaller tournaments and in the 2019 UK nationals he finished 5/86 using 10T. Steve has experience using all the factions of Malifaux but for the Super League has opted for Ressers where in our first game he will use Reva vs my Marcus (Neverborn)

The week one game is as follows:

Deployment: Wedge

Strat: Corrupted Leylines

Schemes: Breakthrough, Assassinate, Vendetta, Leave Your Mark, Spread Them Out

Predictions

----------------------------------

Jamie F’n Varney vs Matt Cole

This game is an easy one to predict for me, in my eyes Jamie is possibly the GOAT of Malifaux even though it kills me to admit it and his recent VWC displays wouldn’t suggest it. Although there is also the fact he was using a faction in Guild he had never played before only ruined, he’ll be much more comfortable with Bayou. Matt is somebody I don’t believe I've had the pleasure to meet in person and his foray into Ressers is new looking at Malifaux Rankings, however ressers are Jamie’s first love so I think he’ll have answers.

Score: 7-2 victory for Jamie

Steves prediction: 6-2 victory for Jamie

----------------------------------

Kai Young vs Dan Brown

This game is tough for me, Kai is one of my oldest and best friends, Dan has loads of vassal experience to Kais half a game. Dan will know his crews inside out which will be a challenge for Kai to overcome, however even for all the shit I give him Kai is a much better player then I give him credit for, he is also the Team Scotland Captain for 6 Nations next year. Based on the scheme pool if Dan drops Sandeep or Colette it will be an uphill struggle for Kai but I still believe he can pull off an early upset.

Score: 5-4 victory for Kai

Steve’s Prediction: 5-3 victory for Kai

----------------------------------

Stef McGlen vs Adrian Mills

Stef is another player who I've never had the pleasure of meeting in person but his chat online is enough for me to know he's a top guy even though he uses 10T filth. Adrian is one of the old guard of malifaux who's been playing for years. On this occasion however I think the versatility of the 10T is going to be too much for the generally slow Guild. Adrians best bet is in Nellie but I don’t know enough of his playstyle to predict if he’ll drop her.

Score: 5-2 victory for Stef

Steve’s score: 3-3 draw

----------------------------------

James Noillavert vs Radek Bry

James is another unknown quantity to me in the Super League which is one of the many selling points for me, getting to play people in the UK outside my Meta despite Vassal’s shortcomings and while Guild are a faction that hold my heart Radek is the current UK master and part of the UK team that came in second in the VWC, due to this I unfortunately can’t predict anything but a Guild loss.

Score: 5-1 victory to Radek

Steve’s Score: 7-3 victory to Radek

----------------------------------

Steven Thomson vs Karl Barley

Steven is another of my local players, who has dropped his usual faction of Guild in favour of practice with Explorers to challenge for a place in the Scotland 6 nations team. Karl like Stef is someone I've not met but get along with in online chats. I have no experience of Karl’s playstyle but Ressers are going to be a tough opponent for Steven with his lack of options. However if he can keep the silly mistakes to a minimum I believe Steven can just edge this one out.

Score: 5-4 victory for Steven

Steve’s Score: 4-3 victory for Steve

----------------------------------

Ross McGuiness vs Reice (Rice Chowder) Chaudery

This game to me is the pick of Round one and could very possibly go a long way to deciding the Biggest Hat in the Bayou at the end. Ross and Rice are both extremely competent players who know the bayou like the back of their hands and this one could very well come down to who has the luck of the cards. Ross always keeps our games locally very close and Rice is capable of doing the same holding me to a draw at the English GT a few years ago, however as is the trend I have to back my Meta in these matches so believe Ross will prove his hat is bigger otherwise the bayou spot in the Scotland 6 nations team could be a weak link.

Score: 4-2 victory for Ross

Steve’s Score: 4-3 victory for Ross

----------------------------------

Luke Athiko vs Carl Lee

Luke is a newer play to the scene joining us in 2018 and playing exclusively Ressers while Carl has been with us since 2016 jumping between Guild and Ressers until the Super League where he is running 10T. These two have come up against each other a few times across the table at tournaments and there hasn’t been a draw between them yet so I believe this one will be a decisive match again. While I believe the 10T can weather the storm the Ressers throw at them, I think Luke’s faction knowledge will stand hi good stead against Carl’s first competitive game with 10T.

Score: 5-4 victory for Luke

Steve’s Score: 6-3 victory for Carl

----------------------------------

Ollie Hedges vs Andrew Humphrey

Ollie is a former UK master and has multiple event wins under his belt while Andrew is often middle of the pack at the events he attends unfortunately unable to register a podium finish at the 14 events he has attended. While this is Ollie’s first foray into Guild and the is a lot to be said for faction consistency, which Andrew has using Outcasts at all his events, I just can't see the upset happening against Ollie.

Score: 7-2 victory for Ollie

Steve’s Score: 7-2 victory for Ollie

----------------------------------

Matt Lewin vs Alasdair Cunniffe

Matt is a member of those elusive Flippin’ Wyrds who burst onto the scene a few years ago and took it by storm, throughout the years we’ve had an intense rivalry over being the best Guild player and in the Super league we get to transfer that to Neverborn. Alasdair is a complete mystery to me, not appearing in Malifaux Rankings and I don’t know who is local meta are. Due to my lack of knowledge on his opponent I’m going to predict a victory for Matt but only a slim one.

Score: 6-5 victory for Matt

Steve’s Score: 5-2 victory for Matt

----------------------------------

Jan Pietrzak vs AJ Barr

Jan is a new player who only joined the game before lockdown struck the UK, I’ve had a few conversations with him online and he seems like a really nice guy that enjoys playing lists in theme in the 10T. AJ is one of the Flippin’ Wyrds and one of the top Bayou players in the country and currently holds the best Bayou badge for the UK. I can see this being a baptism of fire for Jan as I know form ou r conversation AJ will be using Zipp although I do believe the game will be a lot tighter then the score suggests.

Score: 8-1 victory for AJ

Steve’s Score: 4-3 victory for AJ

----------------------------------

Rich Walters vs Luke Cocksedge

Two of my favourite people in the scene of Malifaux, who have both been around for ages this is another big hitting Round 1 match up. Rich has been on the up and up in the past 12 months qualifying for the 2019/2020 Masters whereas anytime you discuss Masters Luke’s is always a name that’s in contention. Rich loses his main advantage over vassal – those dreamy hypnotizing eyes, however Luke is our resident old man using technology so it makes up for it. Another game I think could be decided by deck luck, master choice is going to be huge, if Rich drops Zipp into anybody bar Marcus or Titania I think he could edge it with the reverse being equally as true not seeing Zipp or Parker makes this a much easier game for Luke.

Score: 5-5 draw

Steve’s Score: 4-4 draw

Here's my own guestimations for round 1.

Jamie Varney 8 vs 1 Matt Cole Ross McGuiness 6 vs 5 Reice Chaudery

Kai Young 4 vs 3 Dan Brown Luke Athiko 4 vs 6 Carl Lee

Stef Mcglen (me) 5 vs 4 Adrian Mills Ollie Hedges 6 vs 4 Andrew Humphrey

James Nolliavert 4 vs 6 Radek Bry Matt Lewin 8 vs 2 Alasdair Cunniffe

Steven Thomson 5 vs 5 Karl Barley Lewis Phillips 5 vs 6 Steve Johnson

Jan Pietrzak 1 vs 7 AJ Barr Rich Walters 6 vs 5 Luck Cocksedge
